Dozens of burning stings after standing on a mound in Florida, or swelling that spread far beyond the bites? Fire ants are a common cause of sting allergy in the Americas and parts of Asia and Australia, and they have now reached Europe. Our test checks your blood for IgE to fire ant as part of 300 allergens and allergen components, next to wasp, hornet and bee venom.
Fire ants grip the skin with their jaws and sting several times, often many ants at once. The venom is mostly alkaloids, which cause the burning pain. Within about a day, most stings turn into small white blisters (pustules). That is a normal venom reaction, not an allergy.
Allergy comes from the small protein part of the venom. Researchers have named four main fire ant venom allergens, Sol i 1 to Sol i 4. Sol i 1 is a phospholipase related to an enzyme in wasp venom, and Sol i 3 belongs to the same antigen 5 family as Ves v 5 in wasps.
Beyond the pustules, some people get a large local reaction: swelling, redness and itching that spreads well beyond the stings over a day or two. Others report hives, swelling away from the stings, wheezing, dizziness or vomiting.
A systemic reaction to fire ant stings is an emergency. Call 112 (EU) or your local emergency number straight away. Do not wait for a test. Anyone who has had one should see a doctor or allergist afterwards.
Until recently, fire ant allergy was a travel topic for Europeans. In 2023 researchers reported an established colony of the red imported fire ant near Syracuse in Sicily, and modelling suggests much of urban Europe has a suitable climate.
For most people in Finland, Ireland, the Netherlands or Germany, the realistic exposure is still travel or living abroad. If you have reacted to stings in the Americas, Asia or Australia, it can be useful to see where you stand.
From your finger-prick sample, the lab measures IgE to a fire ant extract (Solenopsis species), as part of 300 allergens and allergen components. A positive result shows sensitisation, not a prediction of how you will react to the next sting. Your report gives the value a class from Negative to Very high. After any reaction beyond the stings, see a doctor or allergist whatever the class.

One finger-prick sample checks IgE to 300 allergens and allergen components, from birch and peanut to cat and house dust mite. Post it to the lab, and about 5 days after it arrives you get a value for every one. Our plain-English guide shows you how to read them. €399 in total, €1.33 per allergen.
Yes, in one place so far. In 2023 researchers reported an established population of the red imported fire ant in Sicily, Italy. Elsewhere in Europe, most people meet fire ants while travelling or living in the Americas, Asia or Australia.
No. Small white pustules within a day are the normal effect of fire ant venom. Swelling far beyond the stings, hives elsewhere or trouble breathing are different. Those need a doctor, and trouble breathing is an emergency: call 112 (EU).
Not necessarily. Some fire ant venom proteins resemble wasp venom proteins, but the overlap is only partial. Our panel reports fire ant and wasp venom separately, so you can see both.
